Training & Development

At Capricorn Care NW Ltd, we believe that the quality of care provided to young people is directly influenced by the knowledge, skills, confidence, and values of the adults supporting them. We are committed to creating a culture of continuous learning, professional development, and reflective practice across all areas of our organisation.

We recognise that working within children’s residential care is both rewarding and demanding. Our approach to training and development is designed to ensure that staff feel supported, valued, and equipped to provide safe, nurturing, and therapeutic care to the young people living within our homes.

Investing in Our People

At Capricorn Care, we see training and development as an ongoing journey rather than a one-time process. From initial induction through to leadership and management development, we aim to provide staff with the tools, guidance, and opportunities needed to grow professionally and personally within their role.

We actively encourage staff to develop their knowledge, build confidence, and progress within the organisation. Whether someone is beginning their career in residential childcare or progressing into senior leadership positions, we are committed to supporting their development every step of the way.

Comprehensive Induction & Mandatory Training

All staff complete a structured induction programme designed to prepare them for working within our homes and supporting young people safely and effectively. This includes mandatory training aligned with children’s homes legislation, safeguarding expectations, and best practice guidance.

Training may include:

  • Safeguarding Children

  • Child Protection

  • Trauma-Informed Practice

  • Behaviour Support & De-escalation

  • Medication Administration

  • First Aid

  • Fire Safety

  • Health & Safety

  • Equality, Diversity & Inclusion

  • Online Safety

  • Recording & Documentation

  • Professional Boundaries

  • Working Therapeutically with Young People

Our training programmes are regularly reviewed to ensure they remain current, relevant, and reflective of legislation, regulatory expectations, and the evolving needs of young people.

Therapeutic & Reflective Practice

As part of our therapeutic approach, staff teams have access to specialist therapeutic training and reflective consultation through our partnership with bMindful Psychology. This supports staff to better understand trauma, attachment, emotional regulation, neurodiversity, and the impact of early life experiences on behaviour and relationships.

We promote reflective practice throughout all levels of the organisation, encouraging staff to continually learn, reflect, and develop their understanding of the young people they support.

Professional Qualifications & Career Progression

Capricorn Care is committed to supporting staff in achieving recognised qualifications relevant to their role within residential childcare. We encourage ongoing professional development and support staff to work towards qualifications such as:

  • Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare

  • Level 4 & 5 Leadership and Management Qualifications

  • Specialist Safeguarding Training

  • Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) Training

  • Therapeutic & Trauma-Informed Practice Training

We are passionate about developing future leaders within our organisation and actively support career progression opportunities across our homes.

Leadership & Management Development

Strong leadership is central to delivering safe, effective, and high-quality care. Our managers and senior staff receive ongoing support, supervision, and professional development opportunities to strengthen leadership skills, promote positive team cultures, and maintain high standards across our services.

We encourage collaborative working, accountability, reflective leadership, and continuous improvement throughout all levels of the organisation.

A Culture of Learning & Development

At Capricorn Care, we are committed to creating a positive learning culture where staff feel empowered to develop, contribute ideas, and continuously improve their practice. By investing in our teams, we strengthen the care, stability, and opportunities provided to the young people living within our homes.

We believe that confident, knowledgeable, and supported staff create the foundations for positive relationships, safe environments, and better outcomes for children and young people.
